Nordic Semiconductor has just announced the general availability of its latest innovation, the nRF9151—heralded as "the smallest and lowest power" system-in-package (SiP) for cellular Internet of Things (IoT) applications. With LTE-M/NB-IoT and DECT NR+ support available now, and satellite connectivity promised for the future, the successor to the nRF9161 is poised for success.
A Game-Changer for Cellular IoT
The nRF9151 is designed to meet the growing demands of IoT developers who seek a highly integrated, compact, and energy-efficient solution. “I'm excited that the nRF9151 is now entering production because we know our customers demand a top-tier LTE-M/NB-IoT and DECT NR+ solution,” said Nordic's Øyvind Birkene. He emphasized that Nordic is unique in offering a complete cellular IoT solution, which is driving high demand for applications in massive IoT markets, including smart metering, asset tracking, and industrial IoT.
Key Features of the nRF9151
The nRF9151 SiP measures just 12×11 mm (approximately 0.47×0.43 inches) and boasts impressive specifications:
- Single Arm Cortex-M33 core running at up to 64MHz
- 256kB of static RAM (SRAM)
- 1MB of flash memory
- Arm TrustZone and CryptoCell security technologies
This allows the nRF9151 to function either as a dedicated modem or as an application microcontroller, catering to various project needs.
Performance and Compatibility
Notably, the nRF9151 is about 20% smaller than its predecessor, the nRF9161, and supports Power Class 5 at 20dBm, in addition to Power Class 3 at 23dBm. It is fully compatible with 3GPP Release 14 LTE-M/NB-IoT and 1.9GHz DECT NR+. Although satellite communication support is promised in future firmware updates, it won't be available at launch.
Development Made Easy
To facilitate rapid development, Nordic has also launched the nRF9151 Development Kit (DK). This board breaks out the SiP's features into an accessible format, featuring:
- General-purpose input/output (GPIO) headers compatible with Arduino UNO pin headers
- A bundled SIM card with a pre-loaded data allowance
- An embedded SEGGER J-Link for easy programming and debugging
The nRF9151 DK is now available for order at a price of $99, while individual nRF9151 SiPs can be purchased starting at $19.87 in single-unit quantities, although they are currently back-ordered at major channels.
The nRF9151 represents a significant leap forward in the realm of cellular IoT solutions, combining compact design with exceptional performance. Whether you’re developing smart metering devices, asset trackers, or industrial IoT applications, the nRF9151 offers the power and flexibility you need.
